In the past, street names were often assigned according to the activity carried out there or in honour of important figures who lived or were born in them. During archaeological work and surveys, remains of an ancient furnace were discovered, which is presumed to have been used for iron smelting and axe manufacturing, located where the bathroom is now situated — a historical reference that helps explain the street's name. The location also allows quick access to the region's beaches and the charming scenery of the Algarve's leeward side.
